Comfort and Care for Removable Denture Users Guide: Solutions to Hits, Wounds and Play Problems

Prof. Dr. By İbrahim Duran:

Removable prostheses (popularly known as "palates" or "dentures") are an important treatment option for patients with many missing teeth. However, most patients who use a new removable prosthesis encounter some initial difficulties: dents, sores, movement, difficulty speaking, and discomfort while eating. Most of these problems are normal and can be adjusted over time. However, it is possible to make this process much more comfortable with proper care and a few simple precautions. In this article, I will provide a comprehensive comfort and care guide for removable denture users.

Problems Encountered When Using New Dentures and Their Solutions

1. Hit and Wound

The new prosthesis may not fit properly into the gum and jaw tissues. This can cause cuts and sores on pressure points. Solution: Do not force your prosthesis while inserting and removing it. If a bruise occurs, stop wearing the prosthesis and consult your physician. Your physician will make the necessary corrections on the inner surface of the prosthesis. Never sand or cut the denture yourself.

2. Play and Stability Problem

Especially in full dentures, the prosthesis may loosen over time and start to move due to jaw bone resorption. Solution: Denture adhesives may be a temporary solution, but are not recommended in the long term. The best solution is to rebase the prosthesis or make a new prosthesis. Implant-supported prostheses radically solve the stability problem.

3. Difficulty Speaking

The new prosthesis feels like a foreign object in the mouth and may make speaking difficult in the first days. Solution: Reading books out loud and doing speaking exercises accelerate this process. Speech usually returns to normal within 1-2 weeks.

4. Difficulty While Eating

You may need to change your chewing habits while eating with the new denture. Solution: Consume soft foods in the first days. Chew the food evenly on both sides. Avoid hard and sticky foods. Over time, chewing function returns to normal.

💡 Information: The process of getting used to a new prosthesis usually takes 2-4 weeks. It is very important to be patient and stay in touch with your doctor during this process.

Removable Denture Care and Cleaning

  • Clean After Each Meal: Remove the denture and run it under running water wash. Prevents the accumulation of food residues and bacteria.
  • Brush at least twice a day: Brush the denture with a soft-bristled brush and denture cleaner. Do not use regular toothpaste (it may be abrasive).
  • Use Denture Cleaning Solutions: A few times a week, soak your denture in water containing special cleaning tablets.
  • Remove at Night: Allow your gums to rest by removing your denture at night. Store the denture in a container filled with water (prevents it from drying out).
  • Brush Your Remaining Teeth: If you are using a partial denture, regularly brush the teeth and gums under the denture.
  • Regular Physician Checkup: Come to your physician at least once a year to check the compatibility of your denture and the health of your oral tissues.

✅ Information: With proper care, the lifespan of removable dentures is between 5-7 years. After this period, the prosthesis may need to be renewed due to changes in the jawbone.

Alternative Solutions for Removable Dentures

If the problems you experience with your removable prosthesis (playing, difficulty speaking, chewing problems) bother you, there may be more comfortable alternatives:

  • Prostheses with Precision Retainers: These are more aesthetic and stable prostheses that are attached to the remaining teeth or implants with special holders.
  • Implant Supported Removable Prostheses: These are much more stable and comfortable prostheses that sit on implants. It provides great comfort, especially in lower full dentures.
  • Fixed Dentures: If your jawbone and general health are suitable, implant-supported fixed dentures (All-on-4, All-on-6) are the most comfortable solution.
