The Effect of Nutrition on Dental Health: Sugar, Acid and Right Foods

Prof. Dr. From the Pen of İbrahim Duran:

The saying "You are what you eat" is also valid for dental health. Our daily eating habits directly affect the health of our teeth and gums. While sugary and acidic foods erode tooth enamel and increase the risk of caries; Some foods strengthen and protect teeth. So, how should we eat to protect dental health? Which foods are tooth-friendly and which are enemy? In this article, I will explain the effect of nutrition on dental health in the light of scientific data.

The Relationship between Sugar and Tooth Decay

Sugar plays the biggest role in the formation of tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth ferment sugar and produce acid. This acid dissolves tooth enamel and causes decay over time. In particular, sucrose (table sugar) is the fastest fermented sugar by bacteria. The frequency of consumption of sugary foods is more important than the amount. Eating a large amount of sugar once a day is less harmful than eating small amounts throughout the day.

⚠️ Important: Consuming sugary foods with main meals is less harmful than snacking in between. Because saliva between meals neutralizes acid and repairs enamel.

Effect of Acidic Drinks on Dental Health

Acidic drinks (carbonated drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks) directly erode tooth enamel. These drinks have a low pH value and, when consumed frequently, lead to enamel loss called "erosion". Erosion causes tooth sensitivity, yellowing and an increased risk of decay. Consuming acidic beverages, especially immediately after brushing your teeth, erodes the enamel even more.

  • Fizzy Drinks: Contains both sugar and acid. They are the most harmful drinks to tooth enamel.
  • Fruit Juices: Contains natural sugar and acid. It should be consumed in moderation.
  • Energy Drinks: Cause serious damage to teeth with their high acid and sugar content.
  • Coffee and Tea: Affect tooth enamel with their acidic structure and stains. It is recommended to consume it without sugar.

Tooth-Friendly Foods

  • Milk and Dairy Products: Contains calcium and phosphorus. It strengthens tooth enamel. Cheese neutralizes acid by increasing saliva flow.
  • Green Leafy Vegetables: Vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and lettuce contain calcium and folic acid. It supports gum health.
  • Fibrous Fruits and Vegetables: Foods such as apples, carrots and cucumbers increase saliva flow during chewing and clean the tooth surface.
  • Green Tea: The polyphenols it contains prevent the proliferation of bacteria and reduce bad breath.
  • Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Almonds: Contains calcium and phosphorus. It strengthens tooth enamel.
  • Water: The best drink. It cleans the mouth, increases saliva flow and strengthens enamel if it contains fluoride.
  • Egg, Fish, Chicken: Contains protein and vitamin D. It supports tooth and bone health.

✅ Information: Eating cheese or chewing sugarless gum after a meal neutralizes acid by increasing saliva flow and reduces the risk of caries.
